6 Key Factors to Improve Employee Well-being and Resilience

6 Pillars of Health to Build Employee Resilience & Well-Being

 ---------------

Building a healthy, resilient workforce is a win/win situation across the board. For the organization, it results in higher productivity and engagement, decreased absenteeism, and ultimately a higher bottom line. For the employees, it results in greater job satisfaction, better health and improved overall well-being.

Mindfulness, Resilience and Employee Well-Being

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from and overcome life’s difficult moments more easily and effectively. There are a number of factors contributing to resilience including self efficacy, emotion regulation, cognitive agility, self compassion, and connections. MindWell develops these resilience factors within a holistic model of well-being which includes 6 Pillars of Health in relationship to a core competence of mindfulness.

6 Pillars of Health to Build Employee Resilience & Well-Being

To build a resilient workforce, employees must have resources to build health in each of the following areas:

1. Mental Health

When a person is experiencing good mental health, they are in a state of well-being in which they realize their own abilities, they can effectively cope with the normal stressors in life, they can work productively and fruitfully, and are able to make a contribution to their community/workplace.

In this state, skills such as focus, attention, memory, executive functioning and cognitive flexibility are heightened, allowing the individual to be more productive and efficient in all areas of work and beyond.

2. Physical Health

A healthy body helps your employees to build and retain the strength required to overcome adversity and improve overall well-being. The two main factors that comprise physical health are what we eat and how we move.

Fueling the body with nutritious, wholesome food can help an individual maintain energy levels throughout the day. And being physically active boosts our energy levels, moods, concentration skills, and self-image. Exercise also releases endorphins, which make us feel happier by activating the reward system in our brains that gives us pleasure and lessens pain.

"One in three Canadian (35%) say financial stress is leading to anxiety, depression, or mental health issues." Particulary as cost of living continues to rise, minimizing financial stress through building financial well-being is critical.

3. Emotional Health

Emotional health refers to a person’s ability to bring awareness to and regulate both positive and negative emotions.

Emotionally healthy people have good coping mechanisms for negative emotions, and they also know when to reach out to a professional for help.

Being able to regulate emotions allows us to be more productive in the workplace because we are not swayed by our emotions on a regular basis.

4. Financial Health

“One in three Canadians (35%) say financial stress is leading to anxiety, depression, or mental health issues,” according to the FP Canada™ 2022 Financial Stress Index. Particularly as cost of living continues to rise, minimizing financial stress through building financial well-being is critical.

Financial well-being is the ability to meet current and ongoing financial needs; feeling secure about your financial future; and being free to make choices that allow you to enjoy life.

High levels of financial stress manifest into physical symptoms such as sleep loss, anxiety, headaches/migraines, digestive issues, high blood pressure, muscle tension, and depression. Often overlooked, building financial health is critical to overall well-being.

5. Environmental Health

Environmental health pertains to where we spend a lot of our time - at home, work, school and in nature. These surroundings and how we operate within them can have a significant impact on our well-being.

These environmental factors influence our daily routines, our connection to ourselves, other people, the natural world and help to develop meaning and purpose. It is important to bring awareness and support to the environmental factors impacting your employees, and make conscious changes that support greater connection, overall well-being and resilience.

6. Social Health

Social health can be defined as our ability to interact and form meaningful relationships with others. It also relates to how comfortably we can adapt in social situations, how well we manage conflict, and even team engagement.

Social relationships of all types - from colleagues to family - have an impact on our mental health, physical health and mortality risk. And, when employees feel socially accepted and comfortable within the workforce, they are more likely to want to stay within the company, decreasing churn rates and the associated costs.
